About Us
Our philosophy is that in order for children to be successful in the twenty-first century global society, each community needs schools that focuses on the development of the whole child; it is not enough to teach children to give them the tools but to teach them to be inquisitive about what the tools are used for and in relation to what and in what context. These are the tenets of International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IBPYP) and the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IBMYP), which have been developed by incorporating the best educational practices from around the world. The curricular premise consist of incorporating thematic, inquiry-based units of instruction which focus on structured inquiry methods that promote higher-level questioning and global thinking, encouraging a child’s natural curiosity.

Superintendent's Message

Alta Public Schools offers a charter experience unlike any other.  Teacher training goes beyond that of typical public schools, which allows Alta schools to go above and beyond the standard approaches to the curriculum.  With the International Baccalaureate Programs offered at Alta Schools, students far exceed the "normal" expectations of the public school.

Our Elementary school, Academia Moderna, is the top performing International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program school in all of Los Angeles County.  Academia Moderna averaged a 34 point growth per year in API since it opened 6 years ago and has continued to grow extensively through these last two years based on internal benchmarks.  This is truly one of the finest charters in South Los Angeles.

Prepa Tec begins its third year of operation and is poised to submit its application for full authorization to the International Baccalaureate Organization this Spring.  Prepa is too young to have any official API scores, but the internal benchmarks over the last two years has shown great growth throughout both years, continuing the success of Alta Schools.  Prepa Tec also offers afterschool opportunities in Sports and teacher designed, educationally based, clubs that have proven both popular and successful.  The success of Prepa Tec has accounted for a five fold increase in enrollment since year one.

Prepa Tech High School is scheduled to open for the 2016-2017 school year and will continue the International Baccalaureate experience right up to college.

Parent involvement at Alta schools continues to grow exponentially.  People like to be part of a winning team and that's what we have at Alta Public Schools.  If you're already in the Alta family, congratulations on your excellent choice.  If you are thinking about enrolling at Alta Public Schools, we highly encourage you to make that leap of faith and come join the family.  You'll be happy you did!

Sincerely,

Barry Baxter
